Texas Rain (Whispering Mountain Series #1) - Jodi Thomas, Linda Stephens Rainey’s rose dress
description

★★★★✩ (This is a review of the audiobook.) Hmmm. Loved this story by the Indomitable Iron Woman of Texas Romances, Ms. Thomas. It is narrated by Linda Stephens, who does a nice job of it, but not a great job. My main problem I had with her reading was that she added a frailty to Sage’s voice, making her sound like an old lady, not the younger baby sister to the hero, Travis. (She 18 not 80.)

Still, there was a steady, almost gentle storyline going on here. Life in the Western Frontier, which Ms. Thomas sets up to subtle perfection. Not that it doesn’t start out with a bang (it does!). However, the love story between Rainey and Travis is a gradual build. They correspond through letters, until he uses the excuse of going to Austin to stand before a judge and get his License to Practice Law - when he really just wants to track her down. Did this little “horse borrower” turned entrepreneur really think she was going to evade a Texas Ranger, even if he is carrying around a little lead in his leg?

There were some nice twists of the story that kept me entertained up until the very end. As always, wonderful secondary characters, some of whom I know will appear in the next installment of the Whispering Mountain series. This was especially fun to do as a “buddy read” in the Western & Medieval Romance Lovers group – so thanks, ladies!

*Duck might be a bit young, he’s about three in the story, but I couldn't resist this cute pic.
